Delhi state consumer dispute redressel commission, in its ruling said that an FIR is not really necessary to claim reimbursement from insurance company in case of theft, as there is no difference between a simple complaint, stating the fact of the incident and a FIR.

The ruling came in the case where United India Insurance Company filed an appeal against an order passed by district forum to pay Rs. 30000 as compensation to Mr. Subhash Chandra Khanna. He lost his wallet in a cinema hall at Jaipur. When he filed for a claim for reimbursement, the insurance company denied the claim in the absence of FIR.

The rejection was even after producing a stamped certificate from the police station which stated that the FIR was registered but not traceable.
