The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) may be delayed further and is expected to begin sometime in March 2008, according to media reports. Non-completion of certain procedures, including carrying out socio-economic surveys are said to be causing delays in this project. These procedures are expected to be complete only by February08.
This Rs 9,250 crore project has also been under fire from experts, former bureaucrats, NGOs and developers for the manner in which it has been structured. Local residents, activists and political parties have also protested against this development. The Maharashtra government-promoted Slum Redevelopment Authority (SRA), which is implementing the redevelopment of Dharavi, proposes to set up a local-level citizens consultative committee and an advisory committee of experts.
Mashaal, an NGO, will carry out a detailed baseline socio-economic survey scheduled to start in October that could continue till mid-February08.
The first phase of the survey is expected to complete by October 31. Based on the natural and topographical division in Dharavi, it has been divided by the consultants into 12 segments. Around 25 teams would be deployed to carry out the survey which is expected to provide accurate details for planning and preparing policies for the holistic redevelopment of Dharavi.
